Undergrounding
  • The feasibility of this has not been independently assessed. The difficulties have been exaggerated and the considerable lifetime cost benefits overlooked.
  • Undergrounding eliminates the electric field, and the magnetic field falls off very rapidly to the side of a buried line, significantly mitigating health impacts.
  • Underground and Undersea technologies are developing and becoming more affordable all the time. With much of the renewable energy generation expected to be offshore, both should receive independent investigation, as should the possibility of underground Direct Current (DC).
  • Technologies exist to bury high capacity lines in a small trench beside main roads. These have not been adequately investigated. If this was achieved the benefit to Scotland would be immense.
